Delta Burke was born to a single mother Jean, who later married real estate agent Frederik Burke, who then adopted Delta. She graduated from Colonial High School in 1974 and had been into modeling since 1972. She won the local beauty contest of the fire brigade of Orlando as Miss Flam and was named the youngest winner of the Miss Florida title in 1974. As a result, she received a scholarship to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, from where she graduated after 2 years.

In 1978, she made her acting debut in the film “Zuma Beach”. After landing several small roles, she accepted the main role in the mini-series “The Seekers” (1979) based on the novel of the same name written by John Jakes. In 1982, Delta appeared in the main cast of the television film “Rooster” directed by Russ Mayberry, then starred alongside Dixie Carter, Michael Lombard, and Jerry Hardin in the sitcom “Filthy Rich” (1982 – 1983) created by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason. Burke then had the lead role in the series “1st & Ten” (1984 – 1988) aired on HBO.”

The actress gained prominence starring in the sitcom “Designing Women” (1986 – 1991) which won several awards, including Viewers for Quality Television Award, Emmy Award, and BMI Film & TV Award. The series gained high viewer ratings, with more than 16 million people watching the show weekly during the 6th season. After this, she appeared in “Delta” (1992 – 1993), the television film “Dangerous Child” (2001), and Broadway plays “Thoroughly Modern Millie” (2003) and “Steel Magnolias” (2005).

Furthermore, Burke is also a designer and founder of her own fashion label Delta Burke Design. Additionally, she owns an antique shop with her husband Gerald McRaney in Collins, Mississippi, both of which she has focused on in recent years.

Delta Burke has been married to the actor Gerald McRaney since 1989; they have no children together, but McRaney has children from a previous relationship. The couple has residences in Los Angeles, Telluride (Colorado), and New Orleans. She is a supporter of gay rights.
