Who was Hugh Beaumont?
Eugene Hugh Beaumont was an American writer, director, and actor. He is best remembered for playing Ward Cleaver in the television sitcom “Leave It to Beaver.” He was born in Eudora, Kansas, to a traveling salesman, and his family moved frequently as a result of his father’s business. After graduating from a private coeducational prep school in Tennessee, he attended the University of Chattanooga and later earned a Master of Theology degree from the University of Southern California.
Beaumont’s career in show business began in 1931, when he made appearances on radio, in nightclubs, and in theatres. He began acting in films in 1940 and went on to appear in a number of films and television projects. In his personal life, the actor has only married once. He married actress Kathryn Adams on Easter Sunday, April 1941. They were married for 33 years before divorcing in 1974. In 1982, Beaumont suffered a heart attack while visiting his son, a psychologist stationed in Munich, West Germany.

- Eugene Hugh Beaumont was born on February 16, 1909, in Eudora, Kansas, to Edward H. Beaumont and Ethel Adaline Whitney. His sister was Gloria Bussman.

- Hugh Beaumont made his film debut in 1940. The majority of his early roles were uncredited and insignificant. In five films from 1946 to 1947, he played private detective Michael Shayne.
- ‘Ford Theatre,’ ‘Big Town,’ ‘Letter to Loretta,’ ‘Topper,’ ‘Adventures of Superman,’ ‘The Lone Ranger,’ and ‘Four Star Playhouse,’ to mention a few.
- The actor made a special appearance on CBS’s ‘The Public Defender.’ In 1955, he co-starred in the war film ‘Hell’s Horizon’ alongside Marla English and John Ireland.
- Beaumont made an appearance in Universal International’s science fiction horror picture ‘The Mole People’ in 1956. He also appeared in an early episode of CBS’s ‘My Friend Flicka’ during this time period.
- In July 1957, he played Jesse James, the renowned western outlaw, in the TV series ‘Tales of Wells Fargo,’ and he also played Jeff Kurth in the western ‘Night Passage.’
- Throughout the 1960s, he featured in a variety of community theatre productions and made a few television appearances on shows such as ‘The Virginian,’ ‘Mannix,’ ‘Petticoat Junction,’ and ‘Wagon Train.’
- Beaumont also worked as a writer, authoring numerous radio scripts, television screenplays, and short tales that he sold to various magazines.
- He left show business in the late 1960s to work as a Christmas tree farmer in Minnesota. Unfortunately, he was forced to quit in 1972 due to a stroke.
